Childhood Cancer

In Nicaragua, each year are detected more than 300 new cases of childhood cancer. The most common type of cancer in the Nicaraguan children is the leukemia (35% of all cases), it remains lymphomas, which are tumors in the lymph nodes, and in third place are brain tumors. Cancer remains the leading cause of death in children.

The Ministry of Health has been developing various strategies in order to increase the early detection and provide children with a better treatment that allows its healing. More recently created the national standard of ICDPC (Integral Care of the Diseases Prevalent in Childhood) Oncology, in order to facilitate early diagnosis especially in health regions of difficult access (rural areas).

In Nicaragua, 75 percent of children diagnosed with some type of cancer reach the cure. The probability of healing is greater if we are attentive recognizing symptoms and signs of alarm…

Treatment

Children’s cancers are not always treated like adult cancers. Pediatric oncology is a medical specialty focused on the care of children with cancer. It’s important to know that this expertise exists and that there are effective treatments for many childhood cancers.

There are many types of cancer treatment. The types of treatment that a child with cancer receives will depend on the type of cancer and how advanced it is. Common treatments include: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplant.
